Right now you’re probably asking yourself what is Meatless Monday and why on earth would anyone want to go meatless on a Monday?

Well, let me start by saying, “Hi, my name is Ameera and I am a self admitted tree hugger”.  While I do love to indulge in the good things life has to offer, things such as sustainability and “Green Living” are important to me as well.

A little history…Meatless Monday (MM) was initially was started in during the war in 1917, by the U.S. Food Administration to help reduce the over consumption (meat being eaten faster than it can be produced) of one of America’s main staples. The logic was, the economy was already being strained by the war and if food supplies got low, that would ultimately do Americans in. MM, along with Wheatless Wednesdays was well received and supported by over 13 million American families. During the first roll out, approximately 116 tons of meat was cut from consumption on a weekly basis. However, after a while, it fell off.

In 2003, Meatless Monday was relaunched, not only with the intention of reducing the amount of meat being consumed, but, also as a preventative measure to reduce the number of illnesses associated excessive meat consumption. While it is realized that a completely meat-free diet is not for everyone, it is also understood that by cutting meat out of our diets at least one day a week, it can greatly improve the quality of life for us, the planet and future generations to come.

The movement is no longer limited to America but, is now recognized globally. So, keeping in line with that, I will ask you every Monday, “What are you eating?” And we’ll explore some delicious meat-free options together. For the recipe, click here
